Department of Anesthesiology Receives New NIH Grants

Congratulations Dr. Charles Emala, Dr. Caleb Ing, and Dr. Maya Mikami

The Department of Anesthesiology would like to congratulate the following members of our faculty on receiving grants to fund their ongoing research. 

  • Maya Mikami,MD, Ph.D., MPH has received a 5-year NIH K08 award entitled “Gelsolin Modulation of Airway Hyperresponsiveness and Inflammation.” Dr. Mikami is investigating the critical role that the actin regulatory protein gelsolin plays in airway smooth muscle contraction and inflammatory cell responses in an allergic model of asthma.
  • Caleb Ing, MD who received a 5-year NIH R01 award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality entitled (AHRQ) entitled “Prenatal Exposure to Anesthesia and Subsequent Neurodevelopmental Disorders." Dr. Ing's research is to evaluate neurodevelopmental outcomes in children after in utero exposure to general anesthesia. 
  • Charles Emala, MS, MD on receiving a 2-year NIH R61 award entitled “Ginger’s Therapeutic Potential in Asthma.” Dr. Emala is determining whether the oral ingestion of a dietary supplement of ginger extract improves the control of clinical symptoms in mild to moderate asthmatics.
