Neurosurgical Anesthesia Fellowship

The Neuroanesthesiology Fellowship Program at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center provides a unique experience at an extremely busy hospital where more than 4,000 neurosurgical, neurointerventional, and neuropsychiatric procedures are performed annually. Faculty members of the Neuroanesthesia Division also conduct unique research and educational projects in one of the largest academic centers in the nation.

The Clinical Neuroanesthesiology Fellowship Program curriculum is compliant with the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC) training recommendations. It is designed to provide fellows with the skills necessary to become academic Neurosurgical Anesthesiologists at a time when major advances are being made in neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neurostimulation, neuromonitoring, and neuroscience.

Fellowship Overview

Clinical neuroanesthesia fellows will work under the direct supervision of the Fellowship Director. They will spend at least six months in the operating room delivering anesthetic care during neurosurgical procedures, one month in neurocritical care, one month in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology, and complete short targeted electives focusing on neuromonitoring, neuropsychology, neurostimulation, and neurotrauma. Clinical neuroanesthesia fellows will be able to spend up to three months working on a neuroscience research project of their choice. They will be invited to attend the annual SNACC meeting, where they will attend the annual Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) workshop, and may present the results of their research.

Clinical neuroanesthesia fellows will be expected to acquire the skills essential to assess and monitor neurosurgical patients, including electroencephalography, evoked potential and blood flow monitoring techniques (transcranial Doppler, cerebral angiography). They will be assigned to neurosurgical cases of increasing complexity and will learn to work in collaboration with experts in multiple specialties during the 12 months of the fellowship. As they gain more experience, they will be encouraged to gain leadership by contributing to the teaching and supervision of anesthesiology residents in training.
