Education Retreat '23: How Leaders Lead

ABA board member says it's all about balance

The leaders of the department's education mission hosted the annual Education Retreat on May 1 at the Faculty Club. The retreat is an opportunity for educators and trainees alike to reflect on the academic work of the year past, and plan for the year ahead.

Vice Chair for Education Dr. Maya Jalbout Hastie and Residency Program Director Dr. Teresa Mulaikal welcomed Dr. Mohammed Minhaj, guest speaker for the retreat. Dr. Minhaj is currently the Harris Family Foundation Chair at NorthShore University Health System.

Dr. Minhaj’s presentation on leadership helped attendees to identify the foundational elements of effective leadership, and to consider their professional development and the leadership traits they wish to cultivate in their own careers. He offered a compelling talk about the dynamic balance leaders must find as they navigate between transparency and confidentiality, emotion and impassivity, and influence and control.

Dr. Minhaj is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Anesthesiology and Chair of the Committee on Professional Development for the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He was an inaugural member of the Leadership Advisory Board for the Association of University Anesthesiologists and Chair of the Kaplan Leadership Award Committee in the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists.
