Our research involves the physiologic characterization of light-mediated airway smooth muscle relaxation. By exposure of airway smooth muscle to specific frequencies and intensities of light, the lab was able to demonstrate novel physiologic relaxation of airway smooth muscle, furthering the field of “Photo-physiologics”. His continued exploration of the mechanisms that govern this phenomenon, will progress into innovative therapeutics and novel avenues for future research. Peter Yim was the recipient of the prestigious Young Investigators Award at the 2017 meeting of the Association of University Anesthesiologists for this research.
The Yim Lab's research into vascular biology involves leveraging his clinical experiences in anesthetic mechanisms and the treatment of (refractory) hypertension. The lab is exploring the mechanisms of GABAA mediated blood pressure modulation in different animal and human models. By exploring the mechanisms of GABAA mediated vasodilation, the lab plans to develop novel therapeutics particularly for patients with refractory hypertension. Peter is the recipient of a grant in 2017 by the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) supporting this research.
