Congratulations to Dr. Jean Guglielminotti, along with Dr. Ruthi Landau and Dr. Guohua Li, authors of HCUP’s Outstanding Article of the Year for “Adverse Events and Factors Associated with Potentially Avoidable Use of General Anesthesia in Cesarean Deliveries.”

The authors report that in New York State, 5.7% of cesarean sections without a clinical indication for general anesthesia are performed with general anesthesia. Compared with neuraxial anesthesia, general anesthesia for cesarean delivery is associated with increased risk of maternal adverse events. Reducing avoidable general anesthetics for cesarean delivery may improve safety of obstetric anesthesia care.

This article, which was published in Anesthesiology in June 2019, is one of only three selected as “outstanding” by HCUP.  The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) is a set of databases and software sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. It includes the largest collection of longitudinal hospital care data in the United States.
