An online open course created by Anesthesiology faculty members has just launched on edX.org.  Titled "Crisis Resource Management," the course was designed by Dr. Vivek K. Moitra and Dr. Jessica Spellman, along with Dr. David O. Kessler of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The course was produced by Columbia’s Center for Teaching and Learning. Few open-access courses are related to healthcare, and this is the first specific to crisis management for healthcare workers.

Crisis resource management is the application of essential, nontechnical skills needed by clinicians in a crisis or emergency situation. Care of the patient is critical, yet information is limited. Decisions must be made quickly, and clinicians need to coordinate care across disciplines and among people who are unfamiliar to each other. The skills learned in the course prepare the clinician to be a dynamic team leader in a crisis, thus optimizing safe patient care. The self-paced course is free and open to all. Visit edX.org to learn more and to enroll.
