Congratulations to Drs. Maya Mikami and Isaac Wu

Maya Mikami

We are proud to announce that Maya Mikami, MD, has been awarded the Provost’s Grant for Junior Faculty who Contribute to the Diversity Goals of the University.

Dr. Mikami started her clinical training right here in the department as a resident in 2010. After completing her postdoctoral residency fellowship, she was recruited into our NIH T32 Research Fellowship, and in 2016, she joined our faculty as an Assistant Professor on the tenure track. In 2019, she was named Director of the Neuroanesthesia Fellowship program.

Dr. Mikami’s research focuses on bringing new options to patients who suffer from inadequate asthma treatment. She is a gifted educator and researcher in neuroanesthesia, a subspecialty in which there still are persistent gender disparities, though the number of women in the field is slowly increasing. The Provost’s Grant program is designed to support Columbia’s diversity plans.

Congratulations, Dr. Mikami!

Isaac Wu

Isaac Wu, MD has been awarded a prestigious Starter Grant award from the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) and the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) for his project, “Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair and Right Ventricular Function: Analysis Based Upon Intraoperative Pressure-Volume Relationships.”

Dr. Wu joined our faculty in the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology as assistant professor in 2015 after completing his residency and fellowship in our department. He assumed the role of Director of Perioperative Echocardiography in 2017.

Dr. Wu has had a longstanding interest in applying innovative echocardiography techniques to clinical research questions that can lead to the improvement of care. The SCA, with funding from the IARS, supports cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia research projects.

Great news, Dr. Wu!
