2018 F.A.T.E. Course

(Focus Assessed Transthoracic Echocardiography) Ultrasound Course

Point of care ultrasonography has been shown to be a very useful bedside tool for the acute care physician/practitioner for the management of an unstable patient. It is able to provide critical information for the accurate

management of acutely ill patients within minutes and is easily repeatable for the monitoring of the response to a treatment in real time. This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the use of surface ultrasound in acute care medicine with a focus on acute hemodynamic and pulmonary assessment. Topics will include basic transthoracic echocardiographic evaluation and imaging including the estimation of ventricular function, and the evaluation of the pericardial space. Basic lung imaging and identification of respiratory pathology will also be discussed and practiced. The use and utility of surface ultrasound in the setting of hemodynamic resuscitation and assessment of different shock types will be discussed. Participants will develop basic ultrasound skills on live models and simulators using current imaging systems and review multiple case scenarios with the associated pathologies on real ultrasound images and clips to deepen the ability to recognize abnormal findings.
